Snowfall II. Snowsled A beautiful, impressionistic and moving portrait of snow. This piece will have your Holiday Concert audience on their feet! A piano prelude introduces the main motive and is followed by flurries in the woodwinds that eventually build to a huge and beautiful climax depicting a steady snowfall. Snowsled begins with a rough first trip down the hill but builds into a fast and steady snow sled ride. Finally, the piece concludes with a short solo piano coda. A STAR SHOWN ABOVE A lovely ballad type work for just about any level group. The work depicts the first Christmas Eve including the search for a room in the inn and the star in the east finally shining above the manger. The piece features quotes of "Silent Night, Away in a Manger, The First Noel, Carol of the Bells, and Star of Wonder". NOVA: A Star Suite This composition was inspired by “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” and “When You Wish Upon a Star”. A nova is a white dwarf star that suddenly and temporarily becomes extremely bright as a result of the explosion at its surface of material accreted from an expanding companion star. The material, mostly hydrogen and helium, is attracted by the white dwarf's gravity and accumulates under growing pressure and heat until nuclear fusion is ignited. Unlike a supernova, a nova is not blown apart by the explosion and gradually returns to its original brightness over a period of weeks to years. HOW SLEEP THE BRAVE "In Remembrance of the Fallen" This piece includes quotes from three funeral songs: Goin' Home, Taps and Amazing Grace and is a tribute to the soldier. A moving original theme is encountered in the middle section along with an off stage trumpet solo. “How Sleep the Brave” by Walter de la Mare: Nay, nay, sweet England, do not grieve! Not one of these poor men who died But did within his soul believe That death for thee was glorified. Ever they watched it hovering near That mystery 'yond thought to plumb, Perchance sometimes in loathčd fear They heard cold Danger whisper, Come! -- Heard and obeyed. O, if thou weep Such courage and honour, beauty, care, Be it for joy that those who sleep Only thy joy could share. ADVENT RHAPSODY "a fantasy on ancient carols" This piece is inspired by three ancient Christmas carols including Lo! How a Rose E’er Blooming, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, and O come, O come, Emmanuel. Much of the thematic material contains fragments of these carols or motives derived from the intervals contained within them. This piece is for more advanced ensembles and provides a challenge yet rewarding musical experience.
